There’s something special about family businesses. The personalised service, long-term relationship building, cooperative culture, product expertise and passion that come from intergenerational companies is hard for the big corporates to match. The passing of a business from one generation of a family to the next often solidifies the best qualities of the venture, while also bringing new energy and perspectives to the company’s operations. That has certainly been the case for Slate & Stone Products.
Our company’s roots run deep. Slate & Stone began as a small retail operation in Nerang on the Gold Coast, back in 1989. Husband and wife founders, John and Karen Anderson, set about bringing their passion for natural slate products to Gold Coast homeowners, builders and landscapers by introducing a specialised range of just seven types of slate to the region. This sparked a love affair with natural stone products, with Gold Coasters embracing the decorative range.
From that humble seed, the company grew over the decades to come into a flourishing operation that now operates from two large factories on the Sunshine Coast and Slack’s Creek, servicing clients Australia-wide, but with a strong connection to Southeast Queensland region, from where the venture was born.
Last year, Slate & Stone celebrated its 30th anniversary, now under the leadership of John’s son, Luke Anderson. John continues to influence the company as a consultant, while Luke is helping to take the business to a new level by creating a truly unique product range known at StukeCo, while broadening the company’s other offerings to incorporate literally 100s of tile, slate, glass mosaic and stone product lines. Though this is far from the seven lines on which the business was founded, its focus on products that are either made from natural stone, or that replicate the appearance of natural stone, remain Slate & Stone’s driving focus.
The company’s expanded range caters to all construction needs; from landscaping, pool building and DIY projects, through to large-scale supplies to shopping centres, roadways, residential master-planned communities, schools and high-traffic entertainment precincts. The durability and quality of the Slate & Stone range has seen its products deployed at Westfield Coomera, the Star Casino pool refurbishment, the cobblestone walkways at Emerald Lakes and in countless other locations around Southeast Queensland and beyond.
From purely natural stone beginnings, to flexible, digital-printed porcelain tiles, everything that Slate & Stone offers now in inspired by the initial vision and passion for natural stone that was sparked by John and Karen Anderson back in the late 1980s. That’s what sets us apart.
